Long-Term Activity (LTA) Social Inclusion in Higher Education

The Long-Term Activity "Social Inclusion in Higher Education" was initiated in 2021 and is a collaborative project between 13 National Agencies, the Academic Cooperation Association, and the Erasmus+ Student Network to support Institutions in implementing inclusion and diversity in Higher Education.

The LTA aimed at supporting National Agencies in their efforts to enhance social inclusion among programme participants with fewer opportunities by fostering thematic exchange, supporting stakeholders trough providing simplified access to relevant information, creating synergies in inclusion between the key actions, and developing recommendations for the further implementation in Erasmus+.

The LTA was organised in three subgroups, covering the following thematic projects:

Subgroup 1: inclusion reader

1. Redesign and promotion of the inclusivemobility.eu website in cooperation with ESN:

As a collaborative project between the Erasmus Student Network (ESN) and the LTA subgroup “Inclusion Reader”, the website inclusivemobility.eu has been redesigned and updated in the framework of the LTA. During this process, several components of the platform were updated, such as the version of the framework and modules, frontend, content types and data model and major improvements on the backend.

Main improvements:

  • Simpler data editing by users (National Agencies, ministries, higher education institutions)
  • Simpler navigation by users (students, National Agencies, ministries, higher education institutions)
  • Improved accessibility through different improvements to the menus and font
  • More information services for participants with fewer opportunities by adding new categories on support services

2. Analysis and publication of country specific and inclusion related data derived from the ESN student survey (in prep.)

Subgroup 2: Data and Resources

The participating NAs have designed and sent out an online questionnaire and an accompanying email to collect the most important results and experiences of the participating NAs in surveys on inclusion within the framework of Erasmus+.

The plan is to provide a data collection as a tool for mutual learning to the NA’s for the (further) development of such surveys. The online questionnaire will remain continuously available for use by NAs and will also be sent to the NAs annually - the resulting data will become part of the collection.

Subgroup 3: Bridging Erasmus+ Key Actions
Inclusive measures from Policy Support to Cooperation Projects to Mobility

All Erasmus+ key actions are instrumental to enhance social inclusion, as it is a horizontal priority. This means that inclusion measures should be integrated in all Erasmus+ projects.

The task of the group was to develop guidance for beneficiaries and National Agencies on how to make Erasmus+ actions and projects more inclusive, and also how to use synergies between the different funding lines to reinforce effects.

Two helpful tools/guidelines were developed, explaining and exemplifying how to create synergies within the key actions of Erasmus+. The guidelines are to be used by:

a) Applicants and/or project coordinators who would like to get a deeper insight into how promote inclusion/synergies within their institutions and

b) National Agencies and higher education institutions to gain more knowledge into how synergies between the Erasmus+ key actions may be multiplied on an institutional level.

Results and Recommendations: Moving closer to inclusive internationalisation in Higher Education

1. As part of the LTA “Social Inclusion in Higher Education”, a Training and Cooperation Activity (TCA) entitled “Moving closer to inclusive internationalisation in Higher Education” has been organised from November 8 to 10, 2023. As a result, a document has been developed summarising the results and recommendations derived from the workshops and the overall event planning and coordination:

In addition to regular online meetings one on-site event “Moving closer to inclusive internationalisation in Higher Education” was conducted.

From 8-10 November 2023, the National Agency Higher Education at DAAD (NA DAAD) has organised a Training and Cooperation Activity (TCA) entitled “Moving closer to inclusive internationalisation in Higher Education” within the framework of the Long-Term Activity (LTA) “Social inclusion in HE”, in which 13 National Agencies as well as representatives from ACA and ESN are involved.

In the TCA “Moving closer to inclusive internationalisation in Higher Education”, with around 110 representatives from HEIs, NAs and expert organisations participating, the following three main goals were tackled:

  1. Communication of inclusion measures at HEIs and inclusive communication
  2. Exchange on the implementation of inclusion and diversity in Erasmus+ in Higher Education
