Erasmus+ Enriching lives, opening minds.

Project “SPREAD EUI”- European Universities Alliances as role models - Spreading innovative results to other higher education institutions” as Long-Term Activities (LTA) in the Erasmus+ Programme

The main aim of the SPREAD EUI project is to facilitate the dissemination of experiences of the European Universities Alliances to higher education institutions not involved in the initiative. Acting as role models is a core task of the Alliances and at the same time a challenging mission. Since the Alliances have “to serve as inspiration for the wider higher education sector», as called for in the Erasmus+ calls „European Universities“,  they need facilators and spaces to fulfil this mission.

This is where SPREAD EUI, launched by four National Agencies from Austria (OeAD), Germany (DAAD), Hungary (Tempus Public Foundation) and Norway (HK dir), comes in: It will help in building synergies and sharing best practices on the European Universities Initiative for the benefit of the whole higher education community. A core activity is to establish a regular exchange between National Agencies on how they can foster a supportive environment for the alliances to share their work to HEIs which do not take part, thus fulfilling their role as multipliers.

The project is a direct result of the TCA conference on European University Alliances: “Spreading innovative results from European University Alliances to other higher education institutions” (see Executive summary and Session reports”)which took place in Bergen in May 2023 and exhibited the need for support for Alliances to act effectively as role models.

Project Duration: 2024-2027
Lead: Germany (NA DAAD)
Partners: Austria (OeAD),
Hungary (Tempus Public Foundation),
Norway (HK-dir)

NA staff meetings on European Universities (as role models)

The 3rd informal online National Agencies (NA) meeting on May 22, 2025, convened approximately 50 participants, including representatives from 23 NAs, the European Commission and other stakeholders. The primary focus was to exchange insights on the European Universities Initiative and its relevance for HEIs not (yet) involved.
The meeting provided a comprehensive overview of the current progress of the LTA "SPREAD EUI" and presented initial findings from a survey addressing the needs of higher education institutions not involved in the EUI. Additionally, the meeting fostered continued dialogue on NA activities linked to the European Universities Initiative. Participants were also informed by the European Commission on the latest advancements regarding European Universities.
Potential synergies between EUI-related support projects were explored and discussed. The meeting concluded with updates and discussions regarding the forthcoming LTA conference, scheduled to take place in Germany in October 2025.

What are LTA?
LTA (Long Term Activities) are supporting cooperation activities to improve the qualitative implementation of the Erasmus+ programme and make it more strategic. The aim is to stimulate the exchange of good practices between European countries according to the priorities set by the European Commission for the current programme generation, and to disseminate the results of Erasmus+ measures. They differ from the usual Training and Cooperation Activities (TCA) in that they extend over several years.
