Local ERASMUS Student Initiatives (LEI)

Since 1991 the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been financing local ERASMUS student groups from the public purse of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In the meantime the LEIs have established at about 70 German universities so far.

LEIs consist primarily of local students who have recently returned from an ERASMUS-exchange and also of European students who currently study at the German host university. Furthermore there are local students who just want to give their support to this idea of international understanding. Other groups forming a part of student associations as AEGEE, EL§A or ESN have thereby developped high continuity.

LEI-activities mainly concentrate on caring and cultural aspects. Members of LEIs also help the International Offices with the reception of new ERASMUS-students. They support the “Incomings” to orientate in the new environment helping them for instance with arranging a timetable and getting over timidity to speak German.

During the term students meet for excursions, sports, they cook together or they meet for parties and international regulars’ tables.

Please find contact persons and adresses of LEI-groups which are currently funded by the DAAD in the list ordered by city.
